India is set to become most populous country on earth by this mid this year after overtaking China. This prediction shot up after China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced during a Tuesday briefing that its population dropped to 1.412 billion in 2022, from 1.413 billion in 2021, for the first time in more than 60 years due to falling birthrate. Current population of India estimated to be 1.4 billion as per Population Clock: World (census.gov).
China long time had strict “one child policy” imposed in the 1980s due to fears of overpopulation but ended same in 2016 and allowed couples to have three children starting from 2021. At the same time, aging population and labor force shrink is also a growing concern in China.
This shift in population may have significant economic impact for both countries considering noticeable economic growth and increase in healthy workforce availability In India, as expert predicts.
